Wound Ballistics: Gunshot Wounds and Principles of Management

Abstract
The preparedness of individual military surgeon to care for missile injuries suffered by trauma patients is based on the understanding of the pathophysiology of injury and the knowledge of wound ballistics. By pooling military and civilian
surgeons
with
sufficient knowledge, the required number of combat surgeons can be met. By sharing knowledge and experience, improvements in care can be achieved.
The principles of the management of missle injured are as important during peace as war. The incidence of wounds and deaths caused by firearms has progressively increased in civilian society(Zone of Interior) over recent several years. Despite
the
large
number of trauma victims in general, most surgeons do not have significant training in trauma today. Pardoxically, military surgeon sees even less trauma than his civilian counterpart during peace except gunshot wound cases.
A review of the wound ballistics and the pathophysiology and management of high velocity missile injuries then becomes essential. And this review discusses the basic principles of management of missile injuries to the various areas of body in an
effort
to address on ongoing need for readiness in peace as well as war.
